The population of Vannes

Vannes, with its 54,773 inhabitants is a town at the centre of the urban community of the region which rallies 24 cities and totals 120,000 inhabitants.

The evolution of the population of Vannes is characterized by:

 

  1. A very strong demographic vitality
    Vannes, with its 54,773 inhabitants, is a town where life is pleasant. With more than 6,000 new inhabitants since 1990, (a more than 13.04% growth in the city population between the two censuses) Vannes is the city that has experienced the biggest growth rate in the West and among all the French cities of more than 40,000 inhabitants. The population of the city almost doubled between 1954 (28,403 inhabitants) and 1999 (54,773).
  2. Steady long term evolution forecasts
    The employment zone in Vannes benefits from one of the most important demographic evolution prospects in Brittany with population growth forecasts superior to 38.5 % between 1990 and 2020 (source: CESR 1998).
  3. An attractive life cradle
    48% Bretons would choose to settle in Vannes if they had to move. According to an IFOP poll realized in 1999 for an important regional daily newspaper based on the following question: “if you had to move to the West, where would you choose to settle?”, Vannes was elected by 48 % Bretons and 11 % on the whole French population. One of the consequences of that strong attraction: the number of accommodations in Vannes has increased by 30% between the two censuses.

The growth of the city population in Vannes between 1990 and 1999 has been ensured by 50 % by natural excess. Vannes accommodates the third university centre in Brittany: the University of South Brittany and the Western catholic university include more than 5,300 students.

According to the 1990 census and to the INSEE, the employment cradle in Vannes sheltered the youngest population in Brittany with Vitré and the two main university cities that are Rennes and Brest.

A population with a strong purchasing power

In 1995, the population of Vannes benefited from the strongest purchasing power among Brittany’s inhabitants with the population of Rennes.
